That's what happened at our first Organisational Ghosts event with the University of Huddersfield. We came to talk about the values, behaviours and traditions that outlive the people who created them. What we got was a room full of debate, with plenty of people wanting to add their own experiences.
So we're doing it again, and this time we're changing the format.
The first event was built around a panel discussion. The second puts the audience at the centre. On Thursday 12 November, we'll open with a short introduction to the theme, facilitated by The Engine Room’s managing director Darren Evans, alongside our special guests:
Then we’ll hand over to the room, giving guests airtime to share and unpick the ghosts in their own organisations.
Some of those stories will be about ghosts worth protecting – the founding principle, the quality standard or the culture that still gives a business its edge. Others will be about ghosts that needed exorcising, because "we've always done it this way" has quietly become a barrier to change.
Working out which is which, is rarely straightforward, and that's where the conversation gets interesting.
There's no obligation to contribute. If you have a story to tell, we'd love to hear it. If you'd rather listen, that's fine too. Hearing how other leaders have recognised, challenged or made peace with their ghosts can be just as valuable, and often sparks fresh thinking about your own.
The event is particularly relevant if you lead a family business, are navigating a leadership transition, work in a long-established organisation with deep-rooted practices, or run a younger business with a strong-minded founder. In short, if you have a shadow of the past but responsibility for the future, this is for you.
